I was rushing around Berlin filming interviews for Australian filmmaker Richard Lowenstein for his documentary about Rowland S. Howard. I was very curious about meeting with Christoph Dreher. I had heard so much about him. When The Birthday Party first came to Berlin they stayed with Christoph Dreher. When I met Christoph I was having difficulty because I had to film with two cameras without any help or assistance. I was all thumbs and a bit awkward, but Christoph graciously put up with it all and told some great stories about Nick Cave, Rowland S. Howard, Mick Harvey and the Birthday Party band members who had stayed in his loft. Christoph was there from the beginning in Berlin involved with music and film. He was one of the first revolutionary music pioneers in Berlin when he founded the post-punk band Die Haut in 1980. Die Haut was primarily an amazing instrumental band with sometime guest singers such as Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, Debbie Harry, Oliver Schütz etc. The first line up of the band consisted of Thomas Wydler, Martin Peter, Remo Park and Christoph. He had studied film-making and started making music videos for his band Die Haut and then went on to make music videos for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for songs such as "Tupelo", "The Singer" and "Mercy Seat“. He then went on to make numerous music documentaries as director and writer and won lots or awards such as the Grimme Preis. He made a lot of incredible music documenteries for German TV ZDF such as "POP ODYSSEE 2 - HOUSE OF THE RISING PUNK" covering the New York punk scene and the 18 part series "LOST IN MUSIC" for ZDF/arte/3sat. Since 2000, Christoph is a well respected professor teaching audiovisual media at Mez Akademie for Design in Stuttgart and he still continues to make film

I was in Berlin filming interviews for Australian filmmaker Richard Lowenstein´s documentary about Rowland S. Howard. One of my first interviews was with Thomas Wydler. I had been filming on my own in Berlin with out any assistance using two cameras. The big camera Sony Z1 and then the smaller Canon 7D because of the great HD quality of the camera. I had filmed two other people prior to this, Oliver Schütz and Christoph Dreher. I was stressed, running late and Thomas was very patient. I was all thumbs that day and as a result Thomas was kind enough to do a second interview with my loyal and helpful ha, ha assistant interviewer Chris Hughes. We managed to do a proper interview in the same restaurant. The one thing I like about this photo is the colour coordination. Here Thomas looks deep in thought pondering the future of the universe.
Thomas is a Swiss musician who has made Berlin his home. He has been one of the core members of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He has been playing drums for the band since 1985. He was also one of the original members of the infamous Berlin band Die Haut. He is presently pursuing a solo career and has a new CD called Soulsheriff.

Day 54 (August 27th, 2010)
Title: Red Handed
The old cliche goes: "Caught red handed!"... Since I haven't been caught yet (not that I'm saying I did anything!), I thought it might be kind of fun to show off that red hand!
This is another "painting with light" trick that I started last night. I just held my hand in-front of the lens, pressed the shutter and then "drew" on my hand/fingers with the laser. I did a couple of them, but I think this one came out the best. It reminds me of the song "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. A bit morose and dark, but its got a nice beat! (If you would like to hear it, its at youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vU22ts-Qcw)

I found her on a night of fire and noise
Wild bells rang in a wild sky
I knew from that moment on
I'll love her till the day that I died
And I kissed away a thousand tears
My lady of the Various Sorrows
Some begged, some borowed, some stolen
Some kept safe for tomorrow
On and endless night, silver star spangled
The bells from the chapel went jingle-jangle
Do you love me?

Onward and onward and onward I go
Where no man before could be bothered to go,
Till the soles of my shoes are shot full of holes
And it's all downhill with a bullet.
This rambling and roving has taken it's course
I'm grazing with the dinosaurs and the dear old horses,
And the city streets crack and a great hole forces
Me down with my soapbox, my pulpit.
The theatre ceiling is silver star spangled
And the coins in my pocket go jingle-jangle.
Do you love me?
There's a man in the theatre with girlish eyes
Who's holding my childhood to ransom.
On the screen there's a death,
there's a rustle of cloth
And a sickly voice calling me handsome.
There's a man in the theatre with sly girlish eyes
On the screen there's an ape, a gorilla.
There's a groan, there's a cough, there's a rustle of cloth,
And a voice that stinks of death and vanilla.
This is a secret, mauled and mangled
And the coins in my pocket go jingle-jangle
Do you love me?
The walls in the ceiling are painted in blood
The lights go down, the red curtains come apart.
The air is full of smoke and dialogue I know by heart
And the coins in my pocket jingle-jangle.
As the great screen crackled and popped
And the clock of my boyhood was wound down and stopped.
And my handsome little body oddly propped
And my trousers right down to my ankles.
Yes, onward and upward
And I'm off to find love
Do you love me?
If you do, I'm thankful
Do you love me?
This city is an ogre squatting by the river
It gives life but it takes it away, my youth.
There comes a time when you just cannot deliver
This is a fact. This is a stone cold truth.
Do you love me? I love you, handsome.
But do you love me? Yes, I love you, you are handsome
Amongst the cogs and the wires, my youth
Vanilla breath and handsome apes with girlish eyes.
Dreams that roam between truth and untruth
Memories that become monstrous lies.
So onward and onward and onward I go
Onward and upward and I'm off to find love
With blue-black bracelets on my wrists and my ankles
And the coins in my pocket go jingle-jangle
Do you love me?

I put these photos together to prove that Australian musician Warren Ellis, virtuoso of violin, bouzouki, guitar, mandolin, piano and flute is in fact mad Russian monk Grigori Rasputin, still alive from black magic despite bullets, poisons and attempted drowning by mortal men.
